Rennet in Boca Burgers? (or not)

20 Feb

Slightly off the typical pizza subject, I wanted to share an update on the use of animal based rennet in Boca Burgers. Specifically, we contacted the company to see if Boca’s All American Burger (which has cheese listed as an ingredient along with “enzymes”) uses animal based rennet.

While we did not get a response from our email inquiry on the website, I spoke with Alice on the customer service line. She confirmed that all Boca Burgers, were made with non-animal based rennet except for the Grilled Vegetable Burger.

This confirms a veggie board post we found here.

So, fellow rennet-free readers, enjoy your cheesy Boca Burgers!

Not Pizza – Still Cheesy Goodness

25 May

Over at Celiac Chicks, where their focus is Gluten Free foods, they’ve provided a great review of a local NYC eatery S’MAC. S’MACdoes offer lots of Gluten Free items, but also plenty of rennet-free Macaroni and Cheese.

Like I mentioned, its not pizza, but it’s a great cheesy meal without the animal products.

Here’s the review:

Rennet Free Cheese Suppliers in NYC

13 May

Through our research into rennet free pizza in NYC, we’ve come across a few suppliers that are making rennet free cheese here locally in NYC. We wanted to highlight these suppliers to help encourage other sources of cheese enzymes than animal based!

Lioni Latticini Cheese:

The Salzarulo family began its tradition in the Latticini business in the town of Lioni, Italy many decades ago. In 1980, the family brought its fine art of cheese-making to Brooklyn, New York where it created a name for itself making fresh, whole milk mozzarella cheese. Within the past three decades, the Salzarulos have transformed their small neighboorhood, family business into a nationally renowned manufacturer and distributor of fresh mozzarella in the United States.

Di Palo Selects:
From their kitchen in Little Italy,

Lou Di Palo and Di Palo Selects are passionate about offering you the best products Italy has to offer and we’re uncompromising about our commitment to quality and tradition.

Joseph Campagna and Sons Mozzarella:

Established in 1975, Joseph Campagna and Sons has made a name for itself as a major source of quality food products for the finest pizzerias and restaurants in the New York metro area. Our Margarita, Vanessa, and Bianca food products are of the highest quality, which allows for our customers to stay in the forefront of the competition.

Hats off to these companies for making high quality cheese in the Italian tradition, but without animal rennet!

Welcome to Rennet Free NYC. For vegetarians and even carnivores, the idea of eating calf liver with every bite of delicious NYC pizza is generally shocking. We’ve created this blog to raise awareness about Animal Rennet (calf/sheep stomach) in our cheese, to find out where we can eat uncontaminated pizza – Safe NYC Pizza, and eventually to Save NYC Pizza!

We’ll update the Safe List on an ongoing basis as we hear back from your favorite local and national chains. Feel free to comment with pizza joints you’d like to see investigated, add some research of your own, or let us know what else you’d like to learn about!
